Our History: Our Founding and Vision
Originally named the Marine Corps Museum of the Carolinas, the organization was founded by MajGen Ray Smith, USMC (Ret), who commanded Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune from 1997 to 1999. MajGen Smith and his wife, Colleen, envisioned a place to preserve the storied legacy of Carolina Marines and Sailors. To bring this vision to life, they, along with Col Bruce Gombar, USMC (Ret) contacted Sergeant Major Joe Houle just before his retirement. “We wanted someone who understands the Carolina MAGTF,” MajGen Smith explained. “And someone who would work tirelessly to make the vision of an enduring tribute a reality.”
SgtMaj Houle, now retired after 24 years of dedicated service to the vision of the museum, played a pivotal role as Director of Operations and Artifacts. His leadership was essential in the museum’s development. We express our deepest gratitude for his invaluable contributions. His dedication to preserving Marine Corps history set the stage for the museum’s exciting future.

Reflection and Celebration Park, the first of the museum’s two phases, has become the site of numerous promotion and retirement ceremonies thanks in large part to its huge Eagle, Globe and Anchor statue.

A New Era
In late 2021, the State of North Carolina awarded funding to the organization for the construction of the 25,000-square-foot museum. This significant investment, along with support from local government entities and private donors, ensured the organization had the necessary capital to oversee the project during construction and beyond. “We are excited to see this organization moving from grassroots to the national stage,” said Ashley Danielson, Vice President of Development. “We have numerous faithful supporters to whom we owe a debt of gratitude.”
“Plans for the museum are now a reality,” said CEO and President, Maj. Gen. Joe Shrader. “We are incredibly grateful to dedicated North Carolina Senators Harry Brown and Mike Lazzara, and North Carolina State Representatives George Cleveland, Pat McElfraft, and Phil Shepard for their instrumental support in securing the construction grant.”
Groundbreaking Ceremony
On May 17, 2024, the Carolina Museum of the Marine celebrated its groundbreaking ceremony, marking a significant milestone in the museum’s journey. This momentous occasion signified the start of construction for the 25,000-square-foot facility at Lejeune Memorial Gardens, near Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. The museum anticipates becoming a major attraction for the 138,000 Marines, Sailors, and Coast Guardsmen serving in the area, as well as their families, friends, military and history enthusiasts, and tourists visiting the state’s coastline.
The immersive exhibits will showcase the honor, courage, and commitment of Carolina Marines and Sailors, bringing their stories to life for generations to come.
